What is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy is the practice of working on the muscles and other soft tissues of the body to improve the physical and psychological health of the client.
A massage therapist acts on the body using pressure, tension, motion or vibration. Massage treatment can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, forearms and even feet!
The word massage comes from the French massage, meaning friction or kneading, from the Arabic massa, meaning "to touch, feel or handle" or from the Latin word massa, meaning mass or dough.
What Happens during Massage Therapy?
On your first visit to Tension Release, the massage therapist will ask you about your medical history, any health problems and your reasons for coming to the clinic. She'll advise you on the different treatment options and the type of massage that's right for you.
The treatment takes place in a relaxing atmosphere with gentle music in the background. You'll be treated on a comfortable, heated, fully adjustable massage table. The parts of the body not being massaged will be covered with towels.
It's perfectly normal to feel nervous if you haven't had a professional massage before. Let the therapist know if you're experiencing undue pain or discomfort, and she'll happily adjust the massage accordingly.
What Are the Benefits of Massage Therapy?
Scientific research confirms that regular massage:

- Improves mood and quality of life

- Enhances immune function

It's been found to have a positive effect on a huge range of disorders, including arthritis, asthma, ADD, autism, bulimia, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, cystic fibrosis, depression, diabetes, fibromyalgia, headache, hypertension, job stress, back pain, multiple sclerosis, post-traumatic stress disorder, pre-menstrual syndrome, insomnia and even cigarette cravings.
